# Context

A document drive contains files used every day, and a backup restores a large
archive after loss. Neither answers the narrower emergency question: what does
the owner or a trusted person need to recover the most important accounts and
documents when the usual devices are unavailable?

Ente Locker is designed for a small collection of identity documents, recovery
codes, notes, and trusted-contact access. It is not a generic drive, photo
library, TOTP generator, or daily password manager. Ente recommends using it
alongside those tools. The existing Ente Photos subscription raises Locker's
allowance to 1,000 items and 10 GB at no extra cost.

Locker currently has no bulk export. That makes it unsuitable as the only copy
or canonical authoring system for recovery material.

# Decision

Trial [Ente Locker](https://ente.com/help/locker/) as a mobile and
trusted-contact copy of a small recovery packet. Keep the canonical packet in
an encrypted local directory covered by the Home Lab's proposed
[restic and B2 archive](/projects/homelab/adrs/023-restic-backblaze-personal-archive).
Keep the minimum printed or hardware-held material needed when every cloud
account is locked.

The first packet covers:

* password-manager and primary-email recovery instructions;
* the location and purpose of hardware security keys;
* domain registrar and renewal instructions;
* insurance, identity, and emergency-contact documents;
* Ente, Proton, Doppler, and restic recovery steps; and
* instructions that a trusted person can follow without knowing the homelab.

Do not store the only Ente recovery key inside Ente. Do not copy the complete
password vault into Locker. [ADR
001](/projects/personal-digital-infrastructure/adrs/001-proton-pass-trial)
governs daily and agent credentials. [ADR
000](/projects/personal-digital-infrastructure/adrs/000-filen-document-library-trial)
governs the general document library.

Promote the trial only after a trusted contact can find the packet, explain the
sequence, and retrieve a harmless test item from a clean phone. Review the
packet every six months and after changing the password manager, primary
email, domain registrar, backup provider, or hardware keys.

Ente Locker has no incremental cost for the existing paid Photos account. Its
[paid limits and export limitation](https://ente.com/help/locker/faq/getting-started)
must be rechecked before acceptance.

# Alternatives

## Keep the packet only in the document drive

A primary-account failure may remove the same drive access needed to read the
instructions. Reject it as the only copy.

## Keep the packet only in the password manager

Emergency access is useful, but it cannot recover the password manager itself
and may be confusing to someone who has never used it. Selected instructions
may live there, but not the sole packet.

## Use Ente Locker as the general document store

Locker has item and capacity limits, no bulk export, and workflows built around
important records rather than arbitrary folders. Reject that use. Its narrow
scope is useful only while the recovery packet stays small.

# Consequences

Critical instructions become available on mobile and to trusted contacts
without creating another unbounded file silo. Every Locker item still needs an
independently recoverable source, and a recovery drill must use more than the
owner's already logged-in phone.
