# Context

Dashlane has been reliable for browser and Android autofill across Ubuntu,
macOS, and Android. Previous Bitwarden and 1Password use was poor enough that a
feature checklist does not justify another trial of either product.

Dashlane is awkward outside the browser. On Ubuntu, a credential for a terminal
or desktop application requires opening Chrome, and the personal plan has no
general CLI. Doppler is excellent for terminals and automation, but it is a
secrets delivery system rather than a password manager with browser and mobile
autofill, passkeys, payment details, and personal account recovery.

The same account may need human and agent access. Splitting accounts between
Dashlane and Doppler would make availability worse. The useful split is between
interactive credentials and purpose-built automation tokens.

# Decision

Keep Dashlane authoritative while running a Proton Pass Plus trial with
synthetic and low-risk accounts. Do not cancel Dashlane during the trial. Avoid
static vault exports because they create unmanaged copies, not because an agent
must never see an interactive credential.

Use this credential boundary:

| Credential                     | Canonical home   | Examples                                                                   |
| ------------------------------ | ---------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Interactive account credential | Password manager | Passwords, passkeys, browser and mobile autofill, recovery codes |
| Scoped automation credential | Doppler | API tokens, deployment keys, service accounts, job configuration |
| Offline recovery material | Recovery kit | Password-manager recovery, hardware-key recovery, restic recovery password |

One account can have its interactive login in the password manager and a
separate scoped API token in Doppler. Do not copy the same password into both.
This boundary chooses the canonical store; it does not forbid agent access.
When no scoped token exists, an agent may retrieve the interactive login through
the password manager's browser, GUI, or CLI flow. A dedicated agent vault is an
optional containment tool, not a requirement that may reduce availability.

Treat credential exposure as a recoverable failure. If a password or token
appears in agent context, logs, or another unintended place, rotate it, revoke
old sessions where the service permits that, and record the incident. Fast,
practised rotation is more useful here than making credentials so difficult to
reach that automation cannot complete the task.

Test Proton Pass on Android, Chrome, Firefox, Ubuntu desktop, macOS, and the
CLI. Use low-risk credentials to compare direct browser or GUI access with an
optional agent vault and short-lived access token. Verify retrieval, rotation,
expiry, revocation, and the access log. Proton documents vault selection, token
expiry, CLI access, and audit records for
[agent access tokens](https://proton.me/pass/access-tokens).

Promote Proton Pass only if it matches or beats Dashlane on:

* Android and browser autofill for real login shapes;
* desktop application and terminal access on Ubuntu;
* passkey and built-in TOTP behaviour;
* import fidelity, encrypted export, and clean-account recovery;
* emergency access and hardware security keys;
* reliable agent access through browser, GUI, or CLI without copying the
  canonical password into Doppler;
* a fast rotation and session-revocation drill after simulated exposure; and
* shared-account use without duplicating secrets in Doppler.

At current annual prices, [Pass Plus is $35.88](https://proton.me/pass/pricing).
The Dashlane Premium renewal notice quotes $57.10 on 19 July 2026, so that is
the current baseline for this project.

# Alternatives

## Keep Dashlane without a trial

This preserves the proven daily experience and included Hotspot Shield VPN.
It leaves terminal retrieval and agent access dependent on GUI handoff. Keep it
if Proton Pass fails the autofill or recovery tests.

## Put all credentials in Doppler

Doppler works well for named environments and scoped service tokens. It does
not replace consumer autofill, passkeys, payment details, or personal recovery.
Reject it for interactive credentials.

## Move immediately to Proton Pass

The CLI and agent access are useful, and Proton Unlimited may make the product
cheap at the margin. Unreliable autofill would still be felt many times each
day. A bundle price is not evidence that the password workflow works.

# Consequences

The trial can measure agent and Linux capability without risking the working
vault. There will be temporary duplication and possibly one short paid overlap.
The project must remove that overlap after it accepts or rejects the migration.

If Proton Pass and Proton VPN both succeed, buying them separately costs
$119.76 per year at renewal. Proton Unlimited costs $119.88 and then adds paid
Mail and 500 GB of Drive storage. At that point Unlimited is the sensible
renewal purchase, even if the project continues using Filen for documents.
